About Berkeley Math Circle Summer Program
The Berkeley Math Circle is one of the oldest U.S. Math Circles, not only does it have an entire set of mathematics textbooks for students in elementary school to high school, its main faculty group mainly consists of professors from the UC Berkeley Math Department. The purpose of the Berkeley Math Circle is to motivate children to grow in mathematics, to help students that are economically disadvantaged, to prepare students for mathematical contests, and to encourage more students to study mathematics and apply them in life and in their future careers. The program aims to expose more students to interesting mathematics presented by professional mathematicians, to create a friendly atmosphere where students can ask questions freely without fear of getting judged or isolated, to give opportunities to students to learn and study together with other students, and to encourage students from economically disadvantaged schools to join and learn together.
The Berkeley Math Circle Summer Program doesn’t focus on merely the concepts, but rather where the concepts were deduced from and how people came up with these ideas. The important part of solving math problems isn’t the amount of knowledge you have, but how much a student can think and try. Students should strive to create different methods of solving problems and not aim to solve a problem as fast as possible.
The Berkeley Math Circle Summer Program is exclusively open to students with certain levels of interest and knowledge in mathematics. In order to partake in this program, please contact TWMC staff to learn more about becoming eligible.
Materials Studied
At the Berkeley Math Circle Summer Program, students will study material that is intellectually demanding and difficult to understand. Only motivated students who are willing to study will be allowed to learn at the BMC. BMC consists of four different levels, beginners, intermediate I, intermediate II, and advanced. Younger students are allowed to study at higher levels if they are capable of doing so. The classes are mainly lectures and discussions; students will be given time to talk and exchange ideas after the lecturer has introduced a problem or a concept. The main goal of the BMC lectures isn't to cram information into the minds of the students but rather to guide them through the process of understanding the material and knowing the logic behind it. Sample circle topics include: symmetry, the pigeon–hole principle, divisibility, counting, probability, invariants, graphs, induction, plane geometry, or inversion in a circle.
